Star Wars: Rogue One's Biggest Mistake

I recently watched Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as it's officially called, for the first time. It's a thriller like we've come to expect of Star Wars and it's certainly great fun to watch, with good writing, fun characters, and a firm establishment of the mythos fans have come to yearn for from the universe. However, there is something that really doesn't sit well with me, but before I got into that, I want to warn anyone who is reading this that there are going to be spoilers ahead. If you haven't watched Rogue One and don't want to be spoiled, don't keep reading past this point. If you just don't care, have seen it, or what have you any reason that you don't mind the spoilers...

My largest reason for disliking the movie is simply the fact that Disney didn't seem to really want to commit to having these characters, or having to explain where they fall into the storyline. Rather than do that, they instead opted to kill the characters off. Every single one of the main characters of the plotline end up being killed for one reason or another, and this might not be as harsh if it were staggered. Instead, however, the very last mission that the characters all undertake sees them killed off, for the sake of a "safety net" of sorts from having to explain the character's presence.

If this is what Disney is going to do with every single other Star Wars story that dares to bring in outliers to the situation, why bother even continuing to watch the movies? It's bad enough to have a sad ending to the movie in the first place when there didn't really need to be one, but to have it every single one of five characters all introduced and held in high regard? It's simply too much for me to desire to keep wanting to watch the movies.

Imagine if the Han Solo movie coming out a couple years from now were to do the exact same thing? Everyone who was a main character besides Han and Chewie? Just kill them off for the sake of it, and let's ignore the fact that we ever brought them in because now the sanctity of the originals is protected. How is that helpful? Characters should be brought in to be explored throughout the series. Sure, a few may die here and there, but a character with no real background dying off for the sake of "keeping safe" in a way is just bad decision making at its finest.

Considering that this is Disney, they probably aren't going to be caring anytime soon. As it stands now, Star Wars is one of the leaders of the film industry in high-quality productions. That being said, I do wish that things would change soon and Disney would recognize its faults in how they handled Rogue One. From bringing in the likeness of Peter Cushing just to have an excuse to throw Tarkin at us, to killing off a set of amazing characters, to further succumbing to the cash grab and not even bothering trying to capture the brilliant pacing of the originals, the new Star Wars shows a lot of flaws that I find people overlooking.

I would still recommend a watch of Rogue One for anyone interested. I just wish that the movie itself hadn't made such a glaring mistake of erasing otherwise amazing characters from the franchise as quickly as it brought them in.
