Undertale?! A theory on why most monsters don't dodge or seem to be attacking
This is something that occurred to me that most people have probably already thought up at this point and figured out before me. So why am I doing it? It's my blog, that's why. I can do what I want! But I digress, let me explain what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the fact that monsters rarely move when they're attacking the character, yet attacks come flying at the character anyway. The monsters also don't make much effort to dodge, outside of one particular skeleton that I'll get into later here.
Well, why don't they make physical moves? The reason, I realized, was pretty obvious. They use magic, all monsters do. Whether it be bones from Papyrus, laser spears from Undyne, fireballs from Toriel and Asgore...the times that actual physical moves are displayed actually become rather obvious, with the monster above the movement box swinging their weapon down into the movement box, or otherwise making other motions, like Sans does when he's flinging the heart around the movement box with his hand motions.
So why don't they dodge? Well, perhaps it's because it's not something that they normally have to do, which is moving physically. The one time that physical moves get swung down into the movement box is when the character fights Asgore. There's some tells before he swings his weapon, prompting the character to move or not move during each of his swings, depending on the colors his eyes flash in sequence. If those weren't colored specifically, dodging them would be impossible.
So that applies, then, to the character. Most of the monsters can't dodge the moves that the character uses, because they're wide reaching physical attacks that move into their "movement box". In such a way, the character actually has every chance to kill the monsters without them being able to put up nearly as much of a fight as he/she puts up against them. This is why the character seems to be godlike in the genocide run and why killing comes rather easily throughout the game, as it's not intended. Humans are that much more powerful than monsters, even if they don't seem it at first.
So how does Sans the Skeleton dodge all of the character's moves until the very end? The answer is simply because he isn't like the other monsters. He has powers beyond them, can study through time, and has been demonstrated to break the game similar to ways the character can, and in other ways the character can't, such as leading the character through "shortcuts" that somehow bring the character into a place that it doesn't make sense for the passage to lead to. If he can be anywhere he wants at any given time, it's entirely possible that all Sans is doing is using the same trick that allows him to "shortcut" to places he wants to be, and thus sliding out of the way. He doesn't "step" out of the way, he slides physically out of the way, taunting the player the first time it happens. This is actually an extraordinary feat, then, if taking into account that the character's attacks are normally unavoidable. It would certainly lend some more meta to a game that is already very genre-aware and knows what it is and what its differences are.
This theory may be a rather bust, but I welcome discussion on this topic if anyone wants to bring up theories of their own or simply want to provide some evidence to the contrary that could be disputed. It's something that I'm sure has already been talked about, but I haven't seen it up for myself, so I figured "why not write about it?"

good one but i believe that dodging is human exclusive just like how magic is monster exclusive and the reason they can dodge is only because while in battle they cannot move as all of their attacks are magical which means that meanwhile you have your turn they will be preparing their magical attacks and as they are completely focusing on it they do not realize that you are attacking and sans dodges only because maybe he was a creation of dr. w.d gaster and as you know gaster is very smart hence, he put many features and magic that is impossible to be found by any other monster species and after gaster's death sans found papyrus who was a real skeleton who was maybe abandoned by his parents also papyrus and sans' mouth shapes are completely different which also says that sans is one of gaster's creations and that is the reason he has many powers which are totally unique like teleportation which no skeleton or any other monster can do and dodging which only humans can do because unlike monsters they do not focus entirely on their magic (because they can't use any) but sans can. and for asriel dreemurr, its simple. he is a god and in my opinion it would very weird for a god to take hits from a 8 year old child. well that's my theory. goodbye ;)
